Why is Lent important for all Christians? Lent is a time of repentance, a time of renewal, a time of preparation for new spiritual growth through prayer and fasting.

The word “Lent” means “Spring,” a time of new growth and renewal. Biblically, Lent is a time of preparation for receiving the anointing of the Holy Spirit on the call of God for your life. Lent commemorates the forty days in which the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

During that time, Jesus conquered every temptation of Satan to act and to believe in the way that Satan wanted to defeat Him. Jesus conquered all thoughts and suggestions of unrighteousness that Satan gave Him and overcame by the help of the Holy Spirit. He then came forth in the marvelous power of the Holy Spirit, and His ministry grew, expanded, and advanced in glorifying God.

May we use this season of Lent, the forty-day period before we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, as a time to fast from our own words and our own thoughts. Put the power of Jesus’ life, death, and Resurrection at the forefront of your heart and mind. And may we rejoice in the marvelous spiritual growth that we will experience come this Resurrection Sunday. May we use Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness as our model of proving our commitment to live in the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus.

May this Lenten season be a most rewarding time of great blessing to all who choose to follow Jesus’ model for overcoming all the powers of darkness arrayed against us. Jesus has shown us this way. It is THE WAY for all of us to learn how to overcome.
